It is a lot of work trying to keep the forum spam free. As the forum was rarely used, I decided it was time to remove it. However, I received a complaint this morning and as a result I have added it back to the website. There is a however though… only members may now post forum comments. Joining is free and easy (it can be done through the forum page), but unfortunately adds an addition step that I think may deter people from posting forum comments.

Anyway, the forum is checked regularly, so please make use of it to post any chess related questions that may be nagging you.

We have just uploaded our latest article entitled “Chess Special Moves”. This article describes at length three special moves that can be played during a game of chess. Each special move has a distinct strategic advantage and should be learned by the beginner chess player as soon as possible.

The three special moves are:

Pawn promotion. A pawn can be promoted to another piece when it reaches the back row.

En Passant. This rule allows a pawn to be taken off the board during the first move under certain circumstances.

Castling. Castling effectively allows a king to pass though a rook. This move is often played in the early game providing the king with a great defensive position.

We have just released our latest article explaining the theory behind first move advantage. This theory simply states that white has an advantage as white always moves first. Although statistically true, the article concludes by proposing that the advantage is insignificant when playing at the casual level.

The article abstract follows:

Belated pop star Michael Jackson coined the immortal words “It doesn’t mater if you are black or white”. The world is certainly rallying to make this true in everyday life, but is it true for a game of chess? Many chess players have at one point questioned whether moving first is an advantage.

This article attempts to put this question to rest.
